The JTB Brighter Earth Project continues to reinforce JTB Indonesia’s commitment to environmental stewardship. This latest initiative focused on Beach Cleaning and Waste Management at Kelan Beach. The location sits close to the JTB Indonesia office and often receives seasonal waste from tides and visitor activity. Therefore, it provides an ideal setting for direct action and environmental learning.

Beach Cleaning at Kelan Beach

Employees and volunteers worked together to clear waste along the shoreline. By the end of the session, the team collected almost 200 kilograms of waste. The debris included single-use plastics, food packaging, cigarette butts, and other inorganic materials. These items frequently appear on beaches in Bali. Moreover, they pose long-term risks to marine ecosystems if left unmanaged.

As a result, the activity allowed participants to witness the direct impact of waste pollution. It also emphasised how individual and collective actions can support coastal protection.

Purpose of the Beach Cleaning Initiative

This CSR activity was developed with several key objectives.
• Reduce waste accumulation along Kelan Beach.
• Raise environmental awareness among employees and the surrounding community.
• Highlight the importance of clean coastal areas for residents and visitors.
• Strengthen knowledge of responsible Waste Management practices.
• Encourage long-term behavioural change through reducing, reusing, and recycling.

In addition, these objectives align with the broader mission of the JTB Brighter Earth Project to support sustainability across all destinations where JTB operates.

Waste Management Seminar by The ZeroWaste Center

After the beach cleaning, participants joined a Waste Management seminar delivered by The ZeroWaste Center by R.O.L.E Foundation. The session introduced practical methods to reduce waste. It also explained proper segregation techniques and the role of recycling within a circular economy. Consequently, participants received clear and actionable guidance that they can apply in daily life.

Learning About Plastics: Types 1–7

The seminar also covered the seven plastic categories, labelled Types 1 to 7.
PET – used for drink bottles and widely recyclable.
HDPE – found in milk jugs and detergent containers.
PVC – used in pipes and packaging, with limited recyclability.
LDPE – present in plastic bags and wrapping.
PP – used in food containers, bottle caps, and straws.
PS – found in disposable cutlery and foam packaging.
Other – mixed or specialised plastics with low recycling potential.

Understanding these categories helps participants make better decisions when using and disposing of plastic products. Furthermore, it supports the organisation’s broader Waste Management goals.

Moving Forward with the JTB Brighter Earth Project

Through hands-on action and structured learning, this program demonstrated how companies can contribute to environmental protection. The integration of Beach Cleaning and education reflects JTB Indonesia’s continuous commitment to supporting Bali’s environment and tourism industry.

Looking ahead, the JTB Brighter Earth Project will continue to expand its sustainability initiatives. It aims to empower teams, partners, and communities to help create a cleaner and more sustainable future.
